New Year Resolutions and Goal Setting How To

What is your new year’s resolution? Setting your resolution up as a goal can help you keep true to yourself and make your resolution “reachable”.

When I think about goals, I think about this quote from Aristotle:  “We are what we repeatedly do.  Excellence in not an act. but a habit.”  What you do once in a while is not as important as what you do every day.  Success comes from results.  And results come from taking consistent action each day.  Many give up half way through others quit when things become tough.  Don’t give up.  Refuse to quit!  Instead focus on setting small goals and turn them into habits!  My trainer recently told me “You will never change your life until you change something you do daily.  The secret of your success is found in your daily routine”.

Writing your goal daily is important.  Goal setting works, and it is not a one-time process.  Your goals can guide you and inspire you.  Let your goals motivate you into taking action and living your life with passion.

Goals are the little steps that bring big results.  The path may not run smoothly or be easy, but  setting goals is important.  It gives a sense of meaning and purpose, it gets us interested and engaged, which is  good for your overall well-being and happiness.

Paying attention to how you set your goals makes you more likely to achieve them and by achieving them you feel good about yourself and your life.

Get started

Decide what it is that you want to do or work towards.

Write it down! Writing down your goals increase your chances of sticking with them.  Be specific.  Your act of writing down your goals daily shows that you are committed to achieving them. Not only are you committed, but the process makes you accountable.

Tell someone.  Telling someone about your goal increases your success and is another way of being held accountable.

Break down your goal.  This is especially important with large goals.  By breaking down your goals you are creating steps on the way to achieving the larger goal.  Breaking down allows you to be more specific.  It also gives you more opportunities of feeling successful along the way, which also makes it more likely that you stay on track towards your bigger goal.

Plan your first step.  An Ancient Chinese proverb says that the journey of 1,000 miles starts with one step.    Even if you are unsure how to begin there are no excuses- your first step can begin with asking someone, research it on the internet and sometimes it is just doing it.

Keep going.  Working towards your goals can sometimes be difficult- you need to preserve and respect the process  If you are struggling, ask people for their ideas.  They may help you see things differently.  If you need a break take a break.  Perhaps you need to adjust your goal- it’s ok.  Just keep going.

Celebrate.  When you reach your goal take time to enjoy it and thank those that helped you. Let others know you reached your goal!
