5 ways to spice up your sober life

5 ways to spice up your sober life
Published on 12/19/2017by Eric Yorlano

Summer can be a difficult time of year to remain sober. Between increased social gatherings with alcohol, disruptions in routine, and the pressure to “let loose,” maintaining recovery often takes extra intention and care.

At Integrity Billing, we understand the importance of every step on the recovery journey, including the ones that don’t happen inside a treatment center. That’s why we’re sharing these five encouraging and practical tips to help you stay strong, grounded, and joyful this summer.

1. Have a Plan Before Social Events

It’s easy to get caught off guard at summer parties where alcohol is flowing freely or old habits resurface. That’s why planning ahead is key. Before you go, decide how long you’ll stay and how you’ll leave if you get uncomfortable. For example, you might call your sponsor or use an app like Calm or Headspace to stay grounded.

We also recommend bringing your own non-alcoholic drinks so that you’re not empty-handed. This can also prevent people from continuously asking if you would like a drink. And if this does happen, have simple responses ready to go, such as “I’m good with this one, thanks!” You don’t owe anyone a long explanation. Protecting your sobriety always comes first, and you are in control of what you share and when.

2. Stick to a Routine (Even in Vacation Mode)

Summer can disrupt your regular structure, especially with vacations, school breaks, or long weekends. But recovery thrives on consistency. Don’t let summer interfere with this!

Keep regular sleep, meal, and exercise times. It’s okay if they change in the summer from the rest of the year, as many people like to sleep in or stay up later. The goal is to remain consistent during these months and ensure you are still getting enough rest, eating nutritious foods, and making time for exercise and hobbies.

Schedule time for support group meetings or therapy, even while traveling. You can find AA and NA groups throughout the country, allowing you to stay connected. Also, keep doing the things that ground you, whether that’s journaling, morning walks, or meditating. Many people find it helpful to bring a self-care kit or something similar when they’re traveling to ensure they have everything they need on hand. Bottom line: Structure is your friend, even when the world feels relaxed.

3. Find Sober-Friendly Fun

You don’t need substances to enjoy summer. In fact, being present makes the season even more beautiful. Look for activities that lift your spirit and keep your body moving. Ideas include:

  • Beach days with friends who support your recovery
  • Hiking or biking local trails
  • Outdoor yoga, art classes, or community events
  • Volunteering or giving back to others
  • Camping solo, with friends, or a recovery group
  • Having a bonfire night with s’mores, music, and stories
  • Joining a softball league

4. Lean on Your Support System

Whether it’s a sponsor, therapist, peer group, or trusted friend, connection is one of the most powerful tools in recovery. Even when everything seems fine, check in regularly with the people who support your recovery. Share your summer plans, how you intend to manage triggers, and the goals you’re looking to accomplish.

Having this open dialogue makes it easier to ask for encouragement when you’re feeling unsure, and more importantly, reach out for help when you need it. Remember, support isn’t just for the bad moments—it’s for all the moments.

5. Celebrate How Far You’ve Come

It’s easy to focus on what you’re avoiding, but try flipping that script. This will help change your mindset, as it can be discouraging to feel like you’re missing out on things or can’t fully enjoy yourself. The reality is that you are building a new and better life, and every sober day is a step in the right direction.

Whether you’re 10 days in or 10 years sober, give yourself credit. It can be helpful to track your progress in a journal or app so that you can see the growth you are making. Be sure to reward yourself with something meaningful like a Starbucks drink or movie. Recovery is a lifestyle, and showing up for yourself every day deserves recognition.

The Hidden Work That Helps Recovery Happen

At Integrity Billing, we’re proud to stand behind the behavioral health providers who make recovery possible. These professionals empower individuals to reclaim their lives, and we’re honored to support that mission by handling the behind-the-scenes work that keeps treatment accessible.

While substance use insurance and billing may not be front and center in the recovery process, they’re foundational to ensuring individuals can receive the care they need without interruption. Without the dedication of treatment centers and support staff, so many wouldn’t have the opportunity to heal.

No matter where you are on your journey, remember this: your strength is real, your progress matters, and even when you don’t see us, you’ve got a team rooting for you every step of the way.
