Finding Gratitude This Fall: How Thankfulness Supports Recovery and Mental Health
Published on 8/12/2025by Denise Corbisiero

Fall is a season that naturally inspires reflection. Beyond its beauty, autumn offers the perfect opportunity to embrace one of the most powerful (and often overlooked) tools for recovery, mental health, and overall wellness: gratitude.

At Integrity Billing, fall is one of our favorite times of the year. The air is crisp, the days are quieter and shorter, and the leaves turn brilliant shades of red and gold. It’s also a strong season for billing. By this point in the year, many patients have already met their annual deductibles, which often means fewer patient balances and faster reimbursements from insurers.

Fall also marks prime open enrollment season for many insurance plans, including Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and employer-sponsored coverage. As we welcome this new season, here are a few tips for cultivating gratitude this fall.

Why Gratitude Is More Than Just “Feeling Thankful”

Gratitude isn’t simply a mood or a fleeting thought—it’s a mindset. It’s the intentional act of noticing and appreciating what is good, even during difficult times. For people in recovery, that shift in perspective can be life-changing.

Research has shown that practicing gratitude can reduce stress and symptoms of depression, improve sleep and emotional resilience, increase optimism, and strengthen relationships and social bonds. When recovery, or life in general, feels challenging, gratitude helps reframe the story, shifting the focus from what’s missing to what’s possible.

Starting a Gratitude Practice This Fall

Recovery often involves facing tough realities: rebuilding trust, managing triggers, and addressing mental health symptoms. Gratitude works as a counterbalance. By focusing on even the smallest positive aspects, such as a supportive friend, a good meal, or a moment of peace, you create emotional “anchors” that support long-term healing.

If you’re ready to bring more gratitude into your life, here are a few simple ways to get started:

Write Down Three Things

Each morning or evening, write down three things you’re grateful for. This can be big (a milestone in recovery) or small (a warm cup of hot chocolate). Doing this on a daily basis builds healthy habits that start or end your day on the right foot.

Share It Out Loud

Tell someone you appreciate them. Verbalizing gratitude strengthens relationships and shows that you value your friends, family, and colleagues. Plus, sharing appreciation can release feel-good chemicals like serotonin and dopamine, reducing stress and improving mood.

Practice Mindful Moments

Take a few minutes to pause and notice the sights, smells, and sounds of fall, such as a rustling leaf or the scent of cinnamon. For many, autumn marks the start of busier schedules, so taking an intentional pause can be helpful in lowering stress and reducing burnout.

Add Gratitude to Recovery Meetings

If you attend recovery meetings or therapy sessions, end with a “gratitude round,” where each person shares something they’re grateful for that day or week. This sets a positive tone for the meeting or session and reinforces supportive connections.

Partner with Integrity Billing: We Help You Focus on What Really Matters

This fall, as our schedules get busier and new challenges emerge, it’s important to embrace thankfulness. Those in recovery from substance use or mental health problems can find this simple practice to be especially beneficial, improving their outlook and deepening their connections with others.

While Integrity Billing handles the complex side of claims and reimbursements, providers and patients have more space to focus on what truly matters, and the small daily moments worth being grateful for.
